Any of their weapons are useless against the so-called &quot;Absolute Terror Field&quot;. But now human-kind had created an exception;the ultimate all-purpose humanoid weapon &quot;Evangelion&quot;. To operate this exception needs the minds of &quot;Children&quot;, 14-year-old juveniles. Shinji Ikari, the only son of the commander-in-chief of the team that administered Evangelion, is selectedthe third of the &quot;Children&quot;…! Do not be fooled by anything &#39;too conventional&#39; that you see early on.<br/><br/>Neon Genesis Evangelion is sometimes heavy, sometimes disturbing, and always interesting. The show has moments of convention- but it certainly is not. First airing in 1995, the only season of N.G.E. has plenty of surprises and twists that the most experienced viewers of visual art will never see coming. Whether it be the animation, music, tone, or characters- realize that when you are through with the show, little will remain the same.<br/><br/>What seemingly starts offanother giant robot-focused action series, that Japan is so known for producing (albeit more mature), becomes a thematic gold mine for religious symbols, philosophy, psychology, spirituality, identity, and various ideas about humanity. One of the prime reasons for its success is how N.G.E. blends all of this together in a somehow accessible, entertaining way (Evangelion never skimps out on the action, though- its top notch!).<br/><br/>Shinji Ikari, the central protagonist in the story, is very well developed,the whole cast is- the voice acting is solid too. The designs of the robots, creatures, and everything in between are brilliant. The animation is original, and yet classic. Another of the series&#39; largest strengths is also the interpretation allowed to the viewer- encouraging you to theorize and wonder.<br/><br/>With so many unique but always fascinating elements going on here, its no wonder Neon Genesis Evangelion is considered one of the best Japanese animations ever.<br/><br/>NOTE: After the final episode, there is more to watch- and instead of a traditional continuation, there are alternate &#39;endings&#39; to the series. Preferably, you should follow with Death/Rebirth, and then The End of Evangelion. There is also also a version of the TV series called Rebuild of Evangelion, a remastered cinematic recap with a new ending, that is still unfinished (only the 1st of its 4 &#39;episodes&#39; have been completed) I managed to watch an Evangelion marathon on an obscure cable channel here in Brazil. Although the dubbing in Portuguese is dreadful, this anime series really got me; i LOVED it! This is how animated series should be like! The first episodes are just O.K., with lots of action and humor anime-style; but when it starts to get all religious and metaphysical, that´s when you know that this is one of the best television series of the century. It´s got greatly developed characters, each one with their own conflicts and agendas; Shinji, the Eva pilot, and his relationship with his father is portrayed excellently on screen. The two final episodes are OUT OF THIS WORLD; it summarizes all of what &quot;Evangelion&quot; is about, and expands it to universal scale. Buy the DVD, the VHS, watch this, just WATCH IT! Even if you don´t like anime at all, it has a real adult plot and storyline. It doesn´t get much better than this.
